Home / Tools / PECR and TPS card

PECR and TPS card.

A plain-English orientation before you email or phone a food business.

NOT LEGAL ADVICE. A rough guide, not a legal opinion. Get advice for your own situation. DRAFT: needs legal review before launch (same as the PECR guide).

1. Who is it?

  • Limited company, LLP or similar: usually a “corporate subscriber”. Go to step 2.
  • Sole trader or a partnership: usually treated like an individual. Emailing needs consent. Phone: step 3.
  • Not sure: treat as an individual.

2. Emailing a company?

  • Say who you are.
  • Give an easy way to opt out, and honour it.
  • Keep it relevant to their business.
  • UK GDPR still applies to personal data you hold about people.

3. Phoning?

  • Check the number against the TPS (individuals) and Corporate TPS (companies) before a live marketing call.
  • Don’t hide your number.
  • If they say stop, stop and make a note.

What we give you

Business type, council, postcode district, an FSA link and, for limited companies and trade-style names only, a name. No phone numbers or email addresses. What you do next is your call and your compliance.
